A Modern Spin
On Tradition
by Poorna Shetty. Friday, 20 June 2008
The next time you’re at a party with no
one to talk to, stick around – the person of your dreams just
might be waiting in the wings.
That’s what happened when Ruth Billington,
30, a nurse, met Nathan Gouveia, 29, an IT project manager, at the Spot
Bar five years ago.
Ruth says: “The people we’d been
talking to walked off, so we just stood there a bit awkwardly. Then
we struck up a conversation and he asked me out on our first date, which
was at the Cuckfields pub in Wanstead.”
Fast forward four years and Nathan whisked Ruth
away for a week in the Maldives as a birthday present – with an
extra surprise. “He arranged for a candlelit dinner and had asked
for my dad’s permission the week before. It was just so romantic.”
They chose a traditional English wedding, with
everything supplied by local businesses.
After a church service in Ruth’s hometown
of Lewes, the couple drove the 20-minute journey to Alfriston, East
-Sussex, to greet their 80 guests at the Wingrove House restaurant.
The couple, who live in Hither Green, southeast
London, added contemporary touches such as -serving “bowl food”
after the champagne and Pimm’s -reception – dishing out
food in large bowls so everyone can pick what they’d like to eat.
Guests had sausages and mash, chicken fricassee and courgette risotto.
Nathan says: “It’s a much more -informal way of eating and
the food was superb.”
After they ate, Chip Jenkins Jazz tinkled
out covers of -traditional and modern jazz and fireworks were provided
by the Commercial Square Bonfire Society.
The couple had learned the foxtrot so they could
twirl away to Nina Simone’s My Baby Just Cares For Me –
and -after partying till 12.30am, they drove away for two nights at
a B&B, followed by a two-week honeymoon in the Maldives and Kerala.

Testimonial
"Thank you! We had a lovely time at the wedding and lots of people
commented on how good the music was! It was particularly entertaining
watching the dance-off towards the end of the night! You really got
people onto the dance floor which was really nice to see! Thanks also
for singing for our first dance, I will always have fond memories of
that, even though I did fumble with my footwork!
Many thanks to all of you again."
